Teacher Sample
This teacher guide provides answers and guidance as you lead your eighth-grade level student through the lessons in Using Language Well, Book 6. Inside you’ll find the complete passage used for each lesson, answers to the lesson questions, helpful teaching tips, and options for customizing spelling lessons to your student’s level.
Also included are rubrics for evaluating your student’s written narrations based on concepts learned in Using Language Well lessons, reinforcing these Charlotte Mason language arts lessons in other subjects such as history, geography, and science.
Sentence Analysis, Part 2
Appositives • Infinitives • Gerunds • Participles • Dependent and Independent Clauses • Simple, Compound, and Complex Sentences • Comma Guidelines • Restrictive and Nonrestrictive Clauses and Phrases • Coordinating and Subordinating Conjunctions
Grammar
Your student will use what he has learned about the parts of speech in Book 5 as he analyzes sentences and explores more deeply how the parts of a sentence work together. He will learn about participles, gerunds, and infinitives as part of the process and continue simple poetry analysis.
English
Many English points from previous Using Language Well books are reviewed in Book 6. New English points are introduced using a guided-discovery approach, encouraging your student to look closely for patterns and discover English usage and punctuation guidelines for himself. Special emphasis is given to comma usage.
Writing
The writing component in Book 6 is conjoined with the narrations that are required in other school subjects, such as history, geography, Bible, and science. As your student learns English and grammar concepts in Using Language Well, he will be expected to apply that knowledge to his written narrations. Rubrics are included to help you hold your student accountable for what he has learned.
Spelling
Spelling words are drawn naturally from the literary passages featured in each lesson. Your student will be assigned a portion of each passage to study and then write as you dictate it to him.
